Description: Well known as an exponent of the 'new simplicity' and a composer of finely turned miniatures, Skempton is heard here as an effective composer of choral and vocal works, also of brief duration, mostly setting liturgical texts. The idiom is resolutely tonal, diatonic with some modal inflections; despite some polemical stuff in the booklet notes about 'mainstream' versus 'experimental' composition, there appears to be little of the experimental about these lovely, lyrical works; monodic solos with memorable melodic lines, or choral pieces of reassuringly restful and consoling nature (with two gentle organ solos in satisfying chord progressions to provide a change of timbre). The Exon Singers; Matthew Owen.
