Description: iarrino employs generous orchestral forces - a full Romantic complement, plus extra percussion - in these works, but almost without exception they are used to expand the range of available timbres (through the customary range of extended playing techniques) rather than for massed tutti effects. Sciarrino's orchestral soundworld often incorporates into its slowly changing soundscapes deep, pulsating, throbbing percussion, suggesting a heartbeat - often an unstable, fibrillating one - and breathy gasps from winds and strings. These organic, living (or dying) sounds are a frequent feature of Sciarrino's acoustical mementi mori, even in works whose dramatic text is less explicit than the one based on the dying testament of the architect of St Peter's. Allegoria begins with fragmentary full quotations from the Mendelssohn violin concerto, floating in abstract sound textures like crystals preserved in vitreous and amorphous lava. Here and elsewhere in the works with solo instruments, the soloists suggest shadows of themselves as they would normally be presented in a concertante work. There is a noticeable progression toward a more concrete use of instruments in the most recent works; the composer has spoken of his music increasingly 'seeking to become voice', though even here there is always a sense of the pent-up suspension of time; full-sounding cantabile gestures acting as isolated islands surrounded on all sides by encroaching nocturnal shadows. 3 CDs. Orchestra Sinfonia Nazional della RAI; Tito Ceccherini.
