Description: Almost equally divided in number (although not in performance time) between short, often brilliant pieces for public occastions and liturgical use and larger-scale concert works, Mathias shows equal adeptness at both. He admitted to Tippett and Messiaen being his deepest, almost subliminal influences and colors and sounds one associates with the latter pop up not infrequently in many of these compositions. One might single out Berceuse, a haunted, more than slightly creepy work which might be a lullaby leading into a nightmare, and Fenestra, a dramatic darkness-to-light sweep of color and momentum as particularly striking but 20th century organ collectors are likely to equally enjoy the rest of these two well-filled (153 min.) discs. 2 CDs. Richard Lea (organ of Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral).
