Description: A versatile composer, Smith has also had a distinguished career as teacher, William Bolcom being among his many students. Essentially a miniaturist, writing in an idiom based in extended tonality, always clear and uncluttered of texture, his works comprise a succession of short movements, some very short indeed, even the most ambitious work here, the somewhat Hindemithian piano sonata. The composer plainly takes delight in humorously 'wrong-footing' the listener, through unexpected metrical shifts and juxtapositions of contrasting material. Jeffrey Grossman (piano), Sarah Darling (violin, viola).
