Description: This valuable series now concentrates on quite rare Martin: the 1952 arrangement for strings of a 1944 organ Passacagia, whose dark and haunted personality was plainly of its time of creation; the 1952 harpsichord concerto, whose solo part stands out like golden threads in a very dark orchestral weave in a work neither neo-baroque nor neo-romantic but thoroughly engrossing; and, finally, the remarkable Polyptique, a major work for anyone much less a composer of the age of 83. Inspired by a set of small panels by an Italian painter depicting various episodes of the Passion, Martin distilled his emotions into six Images (lasting around 25 minutes) which are thoughtful and profoundly moving. Willi Zimmermann (violin), Rudolf Scheidegger (harpsichord), Musikkollegium Winterthur; Jac van Steen.
