NIELS GADE (1817-1890): Violin Sonatas in A, Op. 6, in D Minor, Op. 21 & in B Flat, Op. 59.

Description: Oddly, no other recordings of these works are currently available on disc. The first sonata is vernal and poetic with a hint of Mendelssohn while the second, from 1849, comes from the height of Gade's European fame and, though in a minor key, is more elegiac than turbulent. A melancholy composer is revealed in the 1885 third sonata, looking back at the good times in an autumnal, Brahmsian way, perhaps feeling left behind by music such as that of Mahler.
