Description: Born in Algeria to a military family (his maternal grandfather was Polish), Witkowski studied at the Schola Cantorum under D'Indy but the fact that he spent his entire career in the city of Lyon accounts for his current obscurity. The quintet (1898) was his first major success but was only published recently; the quartet (1902) was immediately brought out by the well-known publisher Durand. Both are on a large scale: three movements lasting 37 minutes for the quintet and a formally unusual five-movements (slow-fast; slow-fast with a scherzo in the middle) for the quartet which clocks in at just over 39 minutes. They use Franckian cyclical form although they are not as dark, glowering and heavy as works of such influence can be. Certain to appeal to collectors of late French Romanticism. Quatuor Debussy, Marie-Jos├Ęphe Jude (piano).
