Description: The major work here is the sonata of 1941, a large-scale piece in four movements (lasting 25 minutes) and conceived on an orchestral scale. Both parts are highly virtuosic with the opportunities for ardent lyricism rather outnumbered by the heroic drama of the piece. Even more barnstorming is the early (1902) Rhapsody - the only work here for solo piano - which is plainly a calling-card for the personal use of the brilliant teenage virtuoso Bowen was at the time. Michael Dussek, John Reid (pianos).
