Description: Ponce spent the years 1925-33 in France, renewing his musical language under the guidance of Paul Dukas. All the works here but the trio (1943) date from this period and the earliest, the Miniatures of 1927 show the chromatic, modal and polytonal harmonies which are present in all of the pieces. The quartet from 1932 assimilates these elements with the evocation of traditional Mexican music, the attractive little suite (1935) pays affectionate homage to Baroque styles and the Sonate (1938) further explores harmonic transformations, a process which reaches its culmination in the violin concerto, which was being written at the same time as the aforementioned trio. Cuarteto Latinoamericano.
