Description: The biggest work here is the 1939 fantasy on Ein feste Burg, whose apocalyptic character which ends in a climax underpinned by extraordinary harmonic tension, perfectly illustrating the mood of Europe as it plunged headlong into the abyss. The two Marian settings (1938 and 1942) are, by contrast, simple and intimate, the Magnificat being the least showy version of what is usually a piece set in magnificent style. The same could be said of the 1931 Te Deum which, though ending in a powerful climax, is clothed in a stark and often severe simplicity to which the raw quality of some of Janácek's sacred works has a distant kinship. German-English texts. Maria C. Schmid (soprano), Heinz Balli (organ), Annette Geisel (trumpet), Adrian Weber (trombone), Daniel Scheidegger (timpani), Kleine Kantorei der Evangelischen Singgemeinde Bern-Zürich; Johannes Günther.
